How many times a week to have sex when TTC?

When people say "we've been trying for XX months", how many times a week are people trying (during the fertile time)?

I read somewhere to have sex for the 5 days before and after OV, so 10 days in total. Did anyone do this and still not get pregnant?

When trying to concieve they say try having sex every other day. Having sex every day is meant to decrease the amount of good quality sperm. But then I had sex nearly every day the month i got pregnant.
